7 Dental care tips while travelling

Traveling is fun, and even more fun if your smile is in great shape. So each time you embark on an adventure away from home, don’t forget to look after your oral health.

It’s easy to forget about your oral hygiene routine, especially when your days are filled with outdoor activities and get-togethers. But caring for your teeth and gums doesn’t have to be too much work.

Here are some dental care tips while traveling.

  1. Visit your dentist before you go. See your dentist in Calgary before you leave. Schedule an oral exam and dental hygiene cleaning to ensure your mouth is in good condition. Allot some time as well for follow-up checks.
  2. Pack your dental hygiene kit. Don’t forget to take your toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash with you. Keep your toothbrush in a separate container so it doesn’t come in contact with your other belongings. Clean the container before use to get rid of bacteria that may be passed on to your toiletries. If possible, use a breathable container to allow ventilation and help water to evaporate.
  3. Carry dental supplies. Pack supplies, such as wax and cleansers, if you’re wearing braces or any orthodontic appliance. The dental office, grocery, or pharmacy may not be easily accessible at all times. It helps to have everything you need with you. Language barriers can also make it challenging to purchase the dental care supplies you need.
  4. Keep your toothbrush dry. Keeping your toothbrush dry can be tough when you’re always on the go. So when you get the chance, leave it out to dry. Moisture attracts harmful bacteria, and you don’t want your toothbrush to harbor microbes while you’re traveling.
  5. Don’t share your toothbrush. Don’t share your toothbrush even with your child. This can cause bacteria to spread and lead to sickness. If you forget or lose your toothbrush, it’s okay to use a disposable one or the complimentary brush provided by the lodge or hotel.
  6. Always use clean water. If you're unsure of the water quality and won’t drink it, don’t use it for brushing your teeth either. You can brush even without toothpaste, but be sure the water is safe for consumption.
  7. Limit sugary and starchy food. Mind your food intake. Eat as you please, but avoid grazing on sugary and starchy food. They attract harmful bacteria that, when not removed, can form into acids and beat down the enamel. Drink plenty of water to help flush down debris in the mouth, especially after eating.
