Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous Oxide is a way to reduce dental anxiety.

Nitrous oxide sedation (laughing gas/tooth fairy air) is a safe and effective way to reduce mild dental anxiety and discomfort. A small rubber (bunny) nose rests on top of your nose and all you need to do is breathe. The gas produces a relaxation response in the brain and body and a mild anesthetic or numbing sensation in the lips, gums, and teeth. You may feel as if you are floating on a cloud. Some people even have the giggles thus the name laughing gas. You will feel relaxed, awake and able to ask questions and let us know how you are doing.

Nitrous oxide used on patient

Nitrous oxide is easily adjustable.

Nitrous oxide is titratable which means that we can quickly and easily adjust the level of sedation to your comfort. It also means you can go back to work after your procedure without any sedative effects apart from an occasional mild headache.

Nitrous Oxide helps patients relax.

Nitrous sedation is especially helpful for those of us with apprehension around needles. Nitrous sedation can also be helpful for people with sensitivity during cleanings, a strong gag reflex or difficulty freezing.

Nitrous Oxide is a great option for children.

We are able to do most filings on baby teeth with no or minimal freezing using nitrous oxide. It is a great option for young children who may find it difficult to stay still for longer appointments or multiple appointments. Children are more likely to bite their cheek or tongue when it is frozen and we are able to do most filings on baby teeth with no or minimal freezing (that is no needles) using nitrous oxide.
